Position Summary
Reporting to the Head of North America Payroll, the Manager, Payroll (Canada) is responsible for leading and managing a Canadian payroll and benefits operations team dedicated to specific Brookfield companies, which include union and non-union employees, director’s fees, and retirees, and benefits.  The Manager will ensure compliance with Federal and Provincial legislations and laws as well as employment standard act that applies to payroll and ensuring compliance with company policies and SOC1 requirements.

Partnering with the respective Brookfield companies’ HR teams, the incumbent oversees the audit and processing of new hires, terminations, status changes, allocation changes, pay rate increases, retro and bonus pay, and manual checks, prepares import templates for salary increases and retro and bonus payments, oversees and approves payroll journal entries and general ledgers and oversees and approves payroll, benefits and union due funding

The Manager, Payroll (Canada) is also responsible for working with the Brookfield HRIS team for Workday HRIS payroll and benefits tables and codes administration and to create Workday HRIS environment change requests and validate test results when received before they are put into production. Oversees the benefits plans, vendors, invoices, filings and reconciliations.

  • Manage Payroll and Benefits Operations and team for Canada; responsible for coordinating workflow through the department and delegating when required; coach and direct the Payroll team
  • Serve as Canadian Payroll and Benefits subject matter expert within the HR workgroup and in Workday HRIS
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll, payroll funding, tax filing on a pay period and on-going basis
  • Co-ordinate changes of custom reports, journals, new payroll codes as required within Workday HRIS
  • Set guidelines for payroll team, set payroll schedule, timelines/deadlines for HR and managers to provide information to payroll for processing
  • Conduct various payroll audits to ensure accuracy and quality control; work with auditors as required
  • Ensure on-going and Year-End reporting is balanced and filed in accordance with legislation and deadlines are met
  • Perform semi-annual reviews
  • Double check and approve all payroll third party payments, payroll journals and payroll funding documents.
  • Approve withholding calculations for stock option plans and the input process for accurate T4 reporting. Ensure all processes documentation and compliance with Sarbanes Oxley and local, provincial and national regulatory agencies
  • Ensure the team is consistently delivering products & services up to the expected standards

Qualifications & Requirements
  • Minimum 10 years of payroll management experience (specifically processing and running payroll)
  • Minimum 3 years of people management experience (in a Payroll Management capacity)
  • CPA Certification or CPM Certification an asset
  • Excellent understanding of payroll and accounting
  • Experience working with Workday is required
  • Strong relationship management skills, with a focus on internal client management
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Employs exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Ability to travel 5-10% of the time (international travel)
